Ruins of Kherlen Bars City

The only remaining monument of the Khitan period in the Central Asian region is the ruins and tower of Kherlen Bars city. These ruins are located in the territory of Tsagaan-Ovoo soum of Dornod Province, 12 km west of Choibalsan city, on the bank of the Kherlen River. The Kherlen Bars city was slightly excavated and analyzed in 1955. According to the results of the analysis, there were four temples built of stone, and the main large temple was at the rear of the stone wall. The temples had 4-6 columns and were of luxurious construction, finely decorated with blue glazed fired bricks and clay sculpture patterns. From inside the temples, in addition to many types of patterns, figures of humans, livestock, as well as dragons and Zeebad (mythical creatures) were found
