Overview of Mongolia's Dornod Province
Dornod Province was established in 1931. From 1941, it was named "Choibalsan Province" after the glory of Khorloogiin Choibalsan, and since 1963, it has been renamed "Dornod" once again.
Dornod Province is located in the easternmost part of Mongolia and is divided into 14 soums and 67 baghs. The center of the province is Choibalsan city, which is located 661 km from Ulaanbaatar city. In terms of land area, it ranks third in the country.
It has rivers such as the Kherlen, Onon, Ulz, and Khalkh, and lakes such as Buir, Khokh, Galuut, and Yakh. There are springs such as Tsagaan Khundii, Utaatminchuur, Erean, Tsagaanchuluut, and Daikhar. It has abundant steppe herbaceous plants and is the province with the largest reserves of hay and pasture in our country.
Wild animals such as red deer, white-tailed gazelle, and Mongolian marmot are abundant. The Khokh Nuur depression (560 meters) located in the territory of this province is the lowest point in Mongolia.
Dornod Province borders the Zabaykalsky Krai of the Russian Federation and the Hulunbuir, Hinggan, and Xilin Gol leagues of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of the PRC. With seven border ports, it is Mongolia's closest gateway to connect with the countries of Northeast Asia.
Additionally, Dornod Province has minerals such as salt, coal, mixed metals, petroleum, uranium, and construction materials. Dornod Province is defined to be developed through the eastern regional tourism sector. Furthermore, researchers believe that the native land of the Great Chinggis Khan's mother, Oulen Ekh, and his queen, Borte, is the current Dornod Province.
