Khorgo Crater
Khorgo Crater is an extinct volcano located in the center of Tariat soum, Arkhangai Province, which erupted around 9,000 years ago. It is considered the last extinct volcano in Mongolia and is believed to have erupted twice. The volcano stands at an elevation of 2,240 meters above sea level. Lava from the volcano flowed eastward along the valleys of the Suman and Chuluut rivers, covering over 100 kilometers. The lava, flowing across a 10-20 kilometer-wide valley, solidified into a thick layer of basalt rock, estimated by scientists to be 40-50 meters thick.
The crater itself has a slope of around 50 degrees, is about 100 meters deep, and has a diameter of 300-400 meters. Inside the crater, large basalt rocks, resembling tables and chairs, are scattered, making it difficult to walk. Entry into the crater is only possible from the western side with extreme caution. About 6 kilometers south of Khorgo, on the eastern bank of the Suman River and about 3 kilometers southwest of the Tariat soum center, there is an interesting site known as the "Stone Ger." This feature was created when bubbles of molten lava solidified and cracked, forming a stone “ger” (traditional Mongolian dwelling) with a "tonoo" (roof opening) and "door" about 170 centimeters high. Such stone formations are unique to this extinct volcano and are not found elsewhere in Mongolia.
Around Khorgo, pine trees have taken root in the cracks of the basalt surface, adding to the area's natural charm. Visitors can observe ancient basalt rocks and gather pine nuts and other wild fruits. Additionally, 20 kilometers from Khorgo, there are three other extinct volcanoes: Bosgiin, Khyariin, and Sugin craters. The Bosgiin crater has a lake at its bottom, even though its western side has collapsed. Khorgo's surroundings are known for precious gemstones, including diamonds. This scenic region is under state protection in Mongolia.
