Overview of Mongolia's Arkhangai Province Guide Province
Arkhangai Province, with a 100-year history, is located in the central part of the Khangai mountainous region, covering an area of 55.2 thousand square kilometers. The province is divided into 19 soums (districts) and 99 bags (sub-districts). Its capital is Tsetserleg, situated 477 km from Ulaanbaatar. Arkhangai borders Khuvsgul to the north, Bulgan to the east, Uvurkhangai to the south, and Zavkhan to the northwest. The highest point is Kharlagtain Peak in the Khangai Range (3,539 meters), while the lowest point is the confluence of the Orkhon and Tamir Rivers (1,290 meters).
The province is rich in wildlife, including argali sheep, ibex, lynx, deer, and wild boar. The landscape mainly consists of forest steppe and grasslands, with the Khangai Range to the southwest and its extension, the Tarvagtai Range, to the northwest. Major rivers such as the Orkhon, Khanu, Tamir, and Chuluut originate in these areas, flowing through the eastern and central parts. The province is also home to notable lakes such as Ogii and Terkhiin Tsagaan, as well as volcanic formations like Khorgo and Taikhar Rock, which attract significant attention.
Additionally, there are majestic mountains like Suvarga Khairkhan, Untaa, Yamaat, Noyon Khangai, and Khan Undur. The region is known for its therapeutic hot and cold springs, such as those at Tsenkher, Khadat, Bor Tal, Tsagaan Sum, Mukhar Khujirt, and Belkh. The Tamir River valley contains iron ore deposits, while the Suman River valley is rich in volcanic rocks and precious gemstones. Many deer stones from the Hunnu Empire have been found in Erdenemandal soum, where the ruins of the palace of one of Mongolia’s ancient kings, Kharuul Khan, are also located.
