Khar Balgas

Khar Balgas (Black City) is the ruined capital of the Uighur Khaganate, which ruled Central Asia for about 100 years during the 8th-9th centuries CE. The ruins of this large city, known locally as Khar Balgas, are located in Kharkhorin Valley, 40 kilometers northeast of Kharkhorin, Arkhangai Province. The city was established on the ruins of the capital of the Göktürk Khaganate. Covering an area of 32 square kilometers, it was a massive walled city with fortifications reaching up to 12 meters high. Excavations have uncovered the remnants of the Uighur Khan's palace and many other historical artifacts.
