Darkhan-Uul Province was established in 1994 and is a major industrial center of Mongolia. The first foundation stone of Darkhan city was laid in the "Burkhant Valley" on October 17, 1961, which marked the beginning of becoming the second major city of Mongolia. The provincial center is called Darkhan city and is located 219 km from Ulaanbaatar city. Darkhan city has four soums and 24 bags. It is included in the Orkhon and Selenge river basin region. It is located in Burkhant Valley on the bank of the Kharaa River. It is situated at an elevation of 707 meters above sea level. 64.5 percent of the total population is youth under the age of 35, therefore it is called the city of youth.
Although the land area of this province is small, it has rich reserves of natural resources such as gold, limestone, coal, and various raw materials for construction materials. Based on its natural resources, it has mainly developed the construction materials industry.
