Tsagaan Cave

Tsagaan Cave is a unique natural and historical site. Since 1995, a joint Mongolian–Russian–American research team has identified 14 cultural layers from the Paleolithic period within the cave. As a result of this research, the timeline of human habitation in Central Asia was pushed back by approximately 200,000 years, proving that humans lived in Mongolia as early as the Oldowan period, around 700,000 BCE. The cave is located 40 km northeast of the center of Bayanlig soum in Bayankhongor Province.
