Ikh Bogd Mountain

Ikh Bogd Mountain, the highest peak of the Ikh Bogd range, rises 3,957 meters above sea level. Surrounding it are majestic mountains such as its subsidiary peaks Baga Bogd, Jaranbogd, and Dulaan Bogd, as well as Orog Lake covering an area of 140 square kilometers, the large and small red salt lakes of Kholboolj, and both flowing and still rivers and lakes including tributaries of the Tui River. During mid-summer, snow may fall on the summit of Ikh Bogd Mountain while rain falls on the mid-slopes and temperatures reach 20–30°C in the valleys. In 1957, a strong earthquake caused part of the mountain to collapse, blocking two river valleys and forming two scenic lakes now known as “Khukh Lake” and “Nogoon Lake,” which attract many visitors. Ikh Bogd Mountain is also one of the regions that strongly appeals to travelers who enjoy mountain trekking.

On the summit of Jaranbogd Mountain, a branch of Ikh Bogd, there is a khirigsuur burial mound with a monument depicting a pair of crossed fish, the tomb of Puntsagiin Ovoo, and unique historical and cultural sites such as the Duut, Khankh, and Khanginakh rock inscriptions and petroglyphs, as well as Bituut’s Ger Rock. These sites greatly attract the interest of researchers and tourists alike.
