Shargaljuut Hot Spring
Shargaljuut Hot Spring is located 60 km northeast of Bayankhongor city, in the territory of Erdenetsogt soum. Both domestic and international visitors travel here during the warm season to treat illnesses. Shargaljuut is Mongolia’s largest hot spring complex, covering 10 hectares and consisting of more than 300 springs with temperatures ranging from 40°C to 96°C. Historical records state that the Khirgisuud first used Shargaljuut Hot Spring for healing in the 7th century. In the 1690s, Mongolian nobles began conducting research at the spring and using it to treat and care for the population. Later, an Indian named Rihe Azala practiced meditation at the spring for three years and identified 108 types of mineral springs capable of curing 64 major diseases. Since then, Russian and Mongolian scientists have continuously studied the spring, and from 1960 onward, a state-run sanatorium has been established and continues operating to this day.
