14-Day Journey to Eastern Mongolia

Eastern Mongolia includes Dornod, Sukhbaatar, and Khentii provinces. Traveling through this region allows you to experience vast steppe landscapes, historical heritage connected to Chinggis Khan, and unique natural formations.

DAY 1:

Khentii Province

Depart from Ulaanbaatar and travel to Khentii province. Arrive in Binder soum and stay overnight at a tourist camp or local accommodation.

DAY 2 & 3:

Deluun Boldog

Deluun Boldog is considered the birthplace of Chinggis Khan. It is located in Dadal soum of Khentii province. A monument complex dedicated to Chinggis Khan stands here. After visiting the site, stay overnight in Dadal soum.

Dadal (Bayan Ovoo)

Dadal soum, also known as Bayan Ovoo, is located in Khentii Province in eastern Mongolia. It is widely regarded as the birthplace of Chinggis Khan and is closely connected to early Mongolian history. Surrounded by forested mountains and the Onon River, Dadal offers beautiful natural scenery alongside important historical monuments and memorial sites dedicated to Chinggis Khan. The area combines cultural heritage with peaceful steppe and taiga landscapes.

DAY 4:

Onon River (Binder)

The Onon River is one of the largest rivers in eastern Mongolia and flows through Khentii province. Historical records state that Chinggis Khan spent his childhood along this river. After exploring the natural beauty surrounding the Onon River, stay overnight nearby.

DAY 5:

Berk (Mining Museum)

Berkh is a small town in Khentii Province known for its mining history. The Berkh Mining Museum showcases the region’s coal mining heritage, displaying old mining equipment, tools, photographs, and documents related to the development of the local mining industry. Visitors can learn about the daily life of miners, the techniques used in earlier periods, and the role mining played in the economic growth of the area.

DAY 6:

Dornod Province

Choibalsan City

Depart from Khentii province and travel to Dornod province. Arrive in Choibalsan, the provincial capital, and stay overnight at a hotel.

DAY 7 & 8:

Menen Steppe

Menen Steppe lies along the route to Buir Lake in eastern Mongolia and is one of the country’s largest and most pristine grassland ecosystems. Known for its vast, uninterrupted horizons, it is home to large herds of gazelle and diverse birdlife.

Buir Lake

Buir Lake is a large freshwater lake located in Dornod province near the Mongolia–China border. The lake is rich in fish resources and is a gathering place for migratory birds. After exploring the lake and its surroundings, stay overnight at a tourist camp.

DAY 9:

Khalkh River

The Khalkh River flows through Dornod province and holds historical significance due to the battles of Khalkhin Gol. After visiting this historical site, stay overnight nearby.

Ikh Burhant Complex

Ikh Burkhant is a historic Buddhist complex near Khalkhgol in Dornod Province, built between 1859–1864, using local materials and traditional craftsmanship, representing significant Mongolian cultural and religious heritage.

DAY 10:

Depart from Dornod province and travel to Sukhbaatar province. Arrive in Baruun-Urt, the provincial center, and stay overnight at a hotel.

DAY 11:

Dariganga

Dariganga is known for its extinct volcanoes and distinctive stone formations. The region contains numerous volcanic craters and basalt landscapes. After exploring these natural formations, stay overnight nearby.

DAY 12 & 13:

Shiliin Bogd

Shiliin Bogd is an extinct volcano in Sukhbaatar province. It is one of the highest points in eastern Mongolia, and many travelers climb it to watch the sunrise. After visiting, stay overnight nearby.

Altan Ovoo

Altan Ovoo is a sacred mountain located in Dariganga soum of Sukhbaatar province. It is worshipped by local people and is considered one of the historically important sacred mountains. After visiting Altan Ovoo, stay overnight in the area.

DAY 13 & 14:

Chinngis City

Depart from Sukhbaatar province and return to Ulaanbaatar, with an optional stay in Chinngis city in Khentii province.
